What Makes Seceda So Special?

The Dolomites in Northern Italy offer some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, making them an incredible backdrop for an elopement.

Seceda is known for its dramatic ridge line, where jagged limestone peaks jut skyward like something put of aa fantasy film. From the summit, you're surrounded by 360-degree views of rolling green meadows, distant peaks dusted with snow, and the charming villages of Val Gardena below. It's wild, poetic, and absolutely cinematic.

Unlike more crowded elopement spots in Europe, Seceda still feels undiscovered. It's popular among hikers and nature lovers don't get me wrong, but there's ample space to find a quiet corner for a private vow exchange. You'll feel like you're the only two people in the world.

The Adventure Begins

Step by Step Travel Guide for Getting to Seceda

Fly To Northern Italy

The closest major airports are Innsbruck (Austria), Venice, Or Verona. From there, rent a car - it gives you the freedom to explore the Dolomites at your own pace.

Side note: I flow into Zurich, Switzerland. I found it to be a little cheaper. Just more driving time is all but loved all the views.

Find a Place to Stay

  • Ortisei: A picturesque town with cozy lodges, boutique hotels, and traditional hospitality. Along with so many delicious restaurants serving Alpine-Italian fusion
  • Selva di Val Gardena: A bit further of a drive but offers luxurious stays and excellent dining options
  • Mareson-Pecol: This is where my group stayed, still a further drive but I would say it was a perfect way to see the Dolomites and eat delicious food

Ride the Cable Cars

  • From Ortisei, take the Ortisei-Furnes gondola to the mid-mountain station
  • Then switch the the Furnes-Seceda cable car, which take you near the summit
  • From there, it's a 5-15 minute hike to reach the iconic cliff edge and panoramic viewpoints.

The best times for an elopement are June through September, when the weather is pleasant, and the meadows are green. If you want snowy winter elopement, plan for late December to March

"well what about timing?"

Time of Day for Your Ceremony

Timing matters but it all depends on what vibe you are going for!

Sunrise or early in the morning offers the softest light, fewer crowds, and the most magical atmosphere. Sunset or late evening offers warm, glowing light and breathtaking colors over the peaks.

Dress for Adventure

Flowy wedding attire looks stunning against the rugged backdrop. Think effortless, elevated, and wind friendly rather than very structured.

Tip: Many couples hike in comfortable clothes and change into wedding attire at the summit for best of both worlds.

Sturdy Hiking Boots

Essential for navigating the trails. Seceda's terrain includes dirt paths, grassy slopes, rocky edges and occasionally mud.

You could absolutely bring a second pair of shoes for portraits, but plan to walk and stand comfortably first.

Layers!!

Weather can change so quickly in the mountains. Pack a cozy jacket or shawl but also be prepared to want to take them off.

Layering not only keeps you comfortable but it adds interest and helps tell the story for your day.

Permits

Check local regulations, as some locations in the Dolomites require photo or event permits.

This is why working with a photographer or planner who knows the area is invaluable. They will help you navigate permits and ensure your elopement is respectful, stress free, and fully compliant.

Legal vs Symbolic

If you want to legally marry in Italy, you will need to navigate Italian bureaucracy, which includes paperwork, translations, and appointments at the local town hall. While it is possible to make it legal as foreigners, the process can be complex. Many couples choose to legally marry at home and a symbolic ceremony in the Dolomites. This give you complete creative freedom and eliminates red tape.
